Most bands, when talking about ambition, see no further than writing a couple of loosely related songs that will eventually be on an album and please a wide audience, and how often do you grab a modern rock album and see that it's just another collection of a dozen or so three to four minutes songs? And even if it is somehow cool to hate hippies, it started in the late Sixties that some visionary pop prophets started writing songs to fill up an entire vinyl LP side or even a whole album. Of course, making 40 minute long songs asks some determination not only of the artist, but also of the listener, and maybe that's why Relapse chose to split Chronoclast into ten sections.

Apart from Introduction and Reintroduction, every track is called Time As..., making it more than clear that there is more than just a strong concept to the album. And actually, their progressive aggressive metal core music is ideal for that sort of experiment. The songs are flowing, like time, one into another, and the album's subtitle Selected Essays On Time-Reckoning And Auto-Cannibalism adds even more to the mysteriousness of the CD.

As this is already the third album (although the first on Relapse) by these Ottawan five-piece, there is the necessary routine you need to accomplish such a complex piece of art. While the actual song parts are leaning heavily into the progressive metal core genre (adequate for fans of Converge, Mastodon and the likes), it is especially the shorter Time As Methodology and Time As Automation that help to prevent Chronoclast to become a collection of different songs called one single song just because they are linked. There are possibly not really recurring leitmotifs as was the case with more classic long-tracks like Thick As A Brick (Jethro Tull) or A Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers (Van der Graaf Generator), but the fact that Chronoclast sucks you in from the beginning and doesn't release you until the very last note 40 minutes later makes this a truly accomplished album, serving the headbanging metal fans as well as the more avant-garde loving people of the Dillinger Escape Plan persuasion.
