Crematory from Mannheim need no further introduction. The band was founded eighteen years ago and ever since has been releasing regularly records, with Infinity being already their eleventh studio album. They usually even made it into the charts, but that didn’t prevent me from having a hard time with their raw gothic sound.

Among the ten new tracks, I only found two that I liked: Where Are You Now and A Story About… are two fitting smashers that furthermore have a certain amount of tension. Otherwise I only found generic triteness with overly obtrusive keyboards trying to force the gothic component into the songwriting. The sluggish pace and cheesy choruses don’t help either, but the raw vocals also sound just wrong.

Most songs are anemic, stale and too tame. Maybe they try to sound like Paradise Lost, but never achieve that level. Even the electronic elements on Never Look Back fail to elevate it from its banality. Out Of Mind would have been better, had it not been for the inadequate vocals and the aforementioned obnoxious keyboards.

Crematory have no reason to be proud of Infinity. With so many good metal bands, old and new alike, around, I don’t see any reason why I should waste my precious time on this.
