Heartbreakdisco are a young three-piece from Denmark who recently released their first EP on Schumacher Records. The opener Candlelight starts the album already in a very rocking fashion, combining emotional pop music with a certain punk edge. Sound Of Love, the next song, is mellower, rather aimed at a Weezer audience, delivering power pop with a sublime melody. From there on, you can pinpoint HBD's style in between these two genres, although you have to admit they do it with a freshness of attitude which is quite pleasing. As this is an EP with only 6 songs, they even hit most of the time bull's eye. The last track, the 90 seconds short Sex And Fire, comes with a melody reminding me of some other song, although I don't know which one.

All of this makes Spikertike a promising debut by a band that is not necessarily original, but that understands to write good songs that leave you wanting for more. Considering that they have primarily influenced by bands like Pavement and Death Cab For Cutie, HBD are a rather loud rocking band, although the vocalist has a distinguished mellow undertone. You can download half of the EP on the band's website, and if you like it, don't hesitate to buy the whole thing!
