CHIHUAHUA – Crythor Du

cover

The older I get, the more bored I get with mainstream music. I consider myself lucky that there is still a fertile underground where one can discover quite exceptional music. Lately bands like Black Midi and Black Country, New Road have combined noisy rock music with progressive tendencies successfully to a wider audience, but if this is still too tame for you, I suggest you check out Chihuahua from Manchester. They combine abrasive noise rock with all kinds of other genres, like the motoric rhythms of krautrock, the generous song lengths found in progressive rock and the wind instruments of jazz rock.

Apart from the three-minute middle track Ungod, which is an ambient soundscape with shrieking saxophone, the four remaining songs are all between six and twelve minutes long. There is structure, but there is also a lot of jamming going on. Where the band was only using the typical rock instruments on the predecessor Violent Architecture in 2021, they have added a saxophone player for their second album Crythor Du, plus a bunch of guest musicians on trumpet, trombone and singing saw.

It's the combination of fierce noise rock with instruments usually found in jazz that delivers an explosive mix that to my ears is rather unprecedented. The overall sense of despair to be found within the songs at times reminds me of Gallon Drunk who had a less violent but just as anarchist attitude. I don’t want to describe the music in too much detail because I believe everyone should discover this near perfect album for themselves.

Why only near perfect? Well, it is a bit on the short side, but worse, after listening to the album, I read that Chihuahua broke up a month after the release of the album. It’s really a shame, because bands like this don’t come around the corner very often. Do yourself a favour and check out Crythor Du. Noise rock fans will be delighted, and everyone else will find here a great entry point into a genre which never really reached the masses.
