SUBLIND – The Cenosillicaphobic Sessions

cover

For a long time, it was quiet around Sublind, one of the most popular thrash metal bands in Luxembourg. Concerts were played here and there, but the last album Thrashing Delirium came out back in 2014. The Covid pandemic and three line-up changes might explain the long wait. The band therefore had enough time to come up with a silly album title: cenosillicaphobia is apparently the justifiable fear of empty glasses. Recorded between March and June 2022, the album would take another 9 months to be released, finally at the end of March 2023.

Those already familiar with Sublind's music will find few surprises on The Cenosillicaphobic Sessions. Which is not a bad thing at all. The musicians were inspired by thrash metal from the mid-80s to the early 90s. The songs are mostly simple, with melody and aggression being well balanced. The lyrics are often about beer, so that the comparison to Tankard was obvious from the beginning. Sublind have already opened for the Hessians a couple of times and this time they even managed to recruit their singer Gerre as a guest vocalist on the title track. Less Tankard inspired is the somewhat darker Boozing.Bastard.Blues, where you can clearly hear the influence of Testament at Souls Of Black times. In general, Sublind sound strongest when they keep their songs compact and don't try to exceed four minutes. Therefore, False Existence is the only weaker track on the album. The almost six minutes long song shows the band from an unusually brutal side, which doesn't suit them so well, and in the end, you have the impression that the song was unnecessarily stretched out. This is however followed by five strong pieces follow, where For Those About To Riot, for which a funny video was shot, absolutely stands out. The album ends with two Luxembourgish songs: Bommeleeër and Haaptsaach Kiffen, showing that the guys’ native tongue is also suitable for metal. Both are faster pieces that remind of Sacred Reich and Nuclear Assault.

Sublind still master old school thrash metal. If you like Tankard, Testament, Overkill and Exodus, you will also enjoy Sublind. The new album contains a lot of future classics like Highspeed Hangover, Cenosillicaphobia and For Those About To Riot, which will join the band’s classic hits like Humpeknupper and Thrashing Delirium. The Cenosillicaphobic Sessions offers hardly anything unexpected, but is still a lot of fun, which is what matters after all.
