Sweet Home

Just like the Ore Mountains, which are located near Chemnitz, this compilation of bands from the former Karl-Marx-Stadt has its highs and lows. Regional compilations often suffer from lack of quality, but Our Psychomatic Love2 can be counted among the better of that category. A first instalment of that series was released already two years ago.

Friends of good rock music will like the Sharon Stoned sounding noise rock of Playfellow, the modern guitar rock of Hihikomoni, the accessible indie pop of Enny 75 and Bally Hoo, the chunky disco rock of Might Sink Ships and the post rock of Erde & Plastik. The dark progressive Grow Or Go and the melancholically noisy The Black Sea show a more extreme face. Country fans are served by Iguana’s Southern rock and the Johnny Cash followers Calaveras. Modern electronica comes from Radar who pay a sonic tribute to Kraftwerk, Triac deliver breakbeats, Roeder’s electronic music is more experimental and hardly accessible, and Bombee+’s weird take at trip hop meets dark wave isn’t so convincing. Also quite nice are the bulky chanson franšaise of Elysee Exit and the spooky instrumental of Silent Laboratories. I only try to dodge De Flandre’s negligible campfire track and Angel Aguirre’s Italian piece that sounds as if recorded through a telephone.

Despite a few weaknesses, I can recommend this CD. First of all there are many more good than bad tracks, second there is only unreleased material, and third, the ridiculously low price of only six euros nearly forces you to buy this compilation.
